Council of Veterinary Medicine Professionals holds plenary meeting to discuss continuing professional development

MACAU, August 12 - The new term of the Council of Veterinary Medicine Professionals (CPMV) recently held the first plenary meeting (8 August) to review the major work achievements since the establishment of CPMV in July 2023 and start various work plans for the new term of CPMV. In order to strengthen the communication with the administrative authorities, CPMV invited the representatives of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) to attend the meeting and introduce the enforcement of the “Law on Veterinary Clinical Care and Commercial Activity of Animals”. In-depth discussions were held on issues such as the long-term development directions of veterinary medicine professionals in Macao and the advancement of institutional development of continuing education, promoting the connection between policies and professional practice.

The meeting was chaired by Wu Sau Fong, Chairwoman of CPMV. The members of CPMV reported the interim results in promotion of accreditation of professional qualification, the code of professional ethics and other aspects in the past three years. The establishment and implementation of the mechanism concerned fully demonstrate the high importance attached to enhancing the quality of veterinary care and strengthening professional self-discipline by the local veterinary medicine sector, which also lay a solid foundation for the continuing professional development of the sector.

Regulation and training work in parallel to enhance the quality of veterinary medicine professionals

To foster the close integration between policies and professional practice, CPMV invited Choi Sok I, Head of the Division of Animal Inspection and Control of IAM, to attend the meeting and introduce the enforcement of the “Law on Veterinary Clinical Care and Commercial Activity of Animals”. According to Choi Sok I, there are currently 92 registered veterinary surgeons and 28 establishments of veterinary clinical care activities in Macao, all of which are subject to the continuous regulation by IAM. Since the law’s entry into force, the level of standardisation of veterinary clinical care and commercial activities in Macao has significantly improved, playing an active role in safeguarding animal welfare, public health and the legitimate rights and interests of pet owners.

CPMV fully recognised the regulatory work achievements of IAM, and both parties carried out in-depth exchanges on the technical issues relating to enforcement of laws and regulations, feedback from the sector and the future optimisation directions. The participants agreed on the importance of establishing a comprehensive mechanism for continuing professional development. In the future, systematic and diverse training programmes should be organised to deepen the registered veterinary surgeons’ understanding of the laws and regulations and continuously enhance their clinical skills and professional competence, with the aim of meeting the long-term development needs of the veterinary medicine sector of Macao.

Supporting cultivation of local veterinary talents to promote sustainable development of the sector

In view of the current lack of systematic education and training resources for the veterinary medicine professionals in Macao, CPMV will continue to strengthen cooperation with government departments, professional groups, higher education institutions and other organisations and actively introduce high-quality training programmes and resources to further enrich the continuing professional development activities in Macao. Meanwhile, CPMV will support the further education counselling efforts of the government to provide local students interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine with a clear understanding of the prospects of the profession and the career development paths.With talent cultivation and professional support operating in parallel, the power of local veterinary talents is nurtured to promote the sustainable development of the sector.
