Global Legal & Sustainable Timber Forum 2026 Closes Today, Facilitating Over 140 Business Matching Sessions with Signed Agreements Totalling MOP 2 Billion

MACAU, September 24 - The Global Legal & Sustainable Timber Forum 2026 (GLSTF 2026) came to a successful close today (23 September). The two-day event featured a main forum, four specialised sub-forums, multiple side events, and over 140 business matching sessions. Six international and local co-operation deliverables were unveiled at the event, over 30% of which were initiated by Macao institutions and businesses, and the total value of the signed agreements amounted to MOP 2 billion, showcasing Macao’s active contribution to the high-quality, sustainable development of the global timber industry chain.

Multiple international partnership outcomes delivered to drive industry upgrades

The GLSTF 2026 saw a marked rise in its global impact, characterised by broader international participation, a stronger presence of Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries, more international partnerships, and deeper engagement from Macao. This afternoon, the event hosts and organiser held a joint press conference, where Sheam Satkuru, Executive Director of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO); Wong Yee Lam, Director of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM); and Luo Xinjian, Secretary-General of the Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC), reported on the event’s execution and achievements.

Deeper engagement with Macao and fruitful results for businesses

This year’s forum saw significantly enhanced participation from local organisations, higher education institutions, and enterprises in Macao. The Macau University of Science and Technology officially joined the research team of the Global Timber Index (GTI) platform. Several Macao organisations jointly launched the International Cooperation and Innovation Center for Green Transformation of Global Supply Chain, and began drafting the Standard for Biomass Aviation Fuel and the Macao Green Standard Management System, to lay the foundations for local standardisation and the research and development of green technologies. Additionally, Macao enterprises participated in the signing of a co-operation agreement on jointly building a Muslim-friendly market environment in Macao, while local tech service providers and green industry bodies signed a co-operation agreement with a Thai industry association on the application of the Blockchain-based Timber Traceability System-Trading Platform (BTTS-TP). Furthermore, Macao tech enterprises reached a co-operation agreement on jointly developing a Macao digital intelligence platform for green procurement, further giving play to Macao’s role as a bridge in international collaboration by linking the supply of green products from the Chinese mainland with demand in Macao and overseas markets.

There were multiple business matching sessions and a timber display alongside the main forum. Regarding the official launch and operation of BTTS-TP in Macao, a representative from a local green industry organisation noted that Macao can leverage its position as a hub to establish an international co-operation platform. They described the agreement with Thailand as a solid basis offering technical services relating to the green supply chain in Southeast Asia, Africa, and other global markets, while opening up international business opportunities for Macao-based institutions.

An Australian enterprise participating in the Ad-hoc Macao Financing & Investment Matchings expressed strong satisfaction with the business matching arrangements. The representative said that they had connected with a listed home furnishings company from the Chinese mainland through the matching sessions, and had reached a preliminary agreement on the joint development of smart home projects. They consider the forum to be an effective platform for promoting international co-operation.

A Spanish-speaking forestry agency, who was exhibiting for the first time, hoped to use this opportunity to showcase their premium logs and timber products and tap into potential target markets. They are currently assessing the potential for trade, investment, and technical co-operation, and are optimistic that new collaboration opportunities will emerge. They recognise Macao as an essential gateway for enterprises in Latin America and North America looking to enter the Asian market.

Macao’s strengths in the MICE and commerce sectors and the event effectiveness gaining widespread recognition

To showcase Macao’s identity as an ideal destination for travel, conventions, and exhibitions, the hosts arranged guided community tours for participating traders. These tours allowed participants to explore World Heritage sites and local neighbourhoods, and experience Macao’s unique charm and diverse, inclusive business environment while attending the event.

A traderfrom Africapraised Macao’s advantages as a host city, highlighting how participants can conveniently experiencethe city’s unique charm and commercial atmosphere while efficiently attending business meetings. They also mentioned that they would recommend business trips to Macao to professionals in the timber industry, in order to foster co-operation.
