At around 8:00 a.m. this morning, “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” smoothly entered the transportation cages specially made for them under the guidance of the animal keeping team. They were transported separately in two transportation vehicles equipped with air-conditioning system, which maintained a temperature between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius inside the vehicle. The Public Security Police Force escorted the fleet of vehicles throughout the ride to the airport. Temporary traffic control measures were also implemented. Customs clearance and inspection procedures were initiated immediately upon arrival at the airport.

The departure ceremony began at 10:00 a.m. Wong Sio Chak, Secretary for Administration and Justice; Ai Yiping, Director of the Department of Social Development of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R; Chang Cheong, Chief of Office of Secretary for Administration and Justice; Chao Wai Ieng, Chairman of the Administration Committee on Municipal Affairs of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM); Hoi Lok Man, Chairwoman of the Consultative Committee on Municipal Affairs of IAM; Chan Weng Hong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Macau International Airport Company Limited; Liu Jun, Vice President of Air Macau Company Limited, and other guests, together with over 20 primary school students, sent their best wishes to both giant pandas, wishing them a smooth, peaceful, healthy and happy future.

The animal keeping and veterinary team of IAM and experts specially sent from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding accompanied the giant pandas on the plane, closely monitoring them and taking care of their health and safety throughout the flight. The animal keeping team also prepared the bamboo and cookies they liked as their exclusive “in-flight meal”. The chartered flight took off at 12:15 p.m.

Upon arrival in Chengdu, “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” will be transferred to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding by designated vehicles. They will undergo at least one month of quarantine and inspection before moving in to Star Cloud Giant Panda Pavilion, which is upgraded for them. The pavilion simulates a natural habitat environment and is equipped with full-fledged welfare facilities, so that the giant pandas can continue to grow up healthily and learn skills to adapt to their habitat in the wild in their new home, so as to experience an enriched and natural way of living.

“Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang’, born on 26 June 2016, are the first pair of giant panda twins born in Macao. They have accompanied the Macao public for ten years and are highly popular among the public and tourists. To ensure a smooth flight, both giant pandas have completed one month of quarantine and inspection. During that time, the joint team composed of experts from both Chengdu and Macao carried out health check-ups on the giant pandas and confirmed they are in healthy condition. The team has also arranged simulated transportation training, so as to familiarise them with the motion and sounds during the transportation process and ensure they depart in their best condition.

For ten years, with the deep care of the Central People’s Government, support from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the attentive care of the animal keeping team, “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” have grown up healthily. They have become a “source of happiness” of the public and witnessed the fruit of the cooperation between the Mainland and Macao in the field of giant panda conservation. This arrangement signifies a new phase in the growth of the two giant pandas and the advancement of the cooperation between the two regions on giant panda conservation to a new level.
